How to apply for Amazon ads?

The short answer

There is nothing to apply for. Sponsored Products is available inside Seller Central to any professional seller account with an active, Buy Box eligible listing, and you can launch a campaign in about five minutes. Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display are the ones with a gate: those need Amazon Brand Registry, which needs a registered trademark.

What is open to you on day one

Sponsored Products. Log into Seller Central, open the advertising console, pick a campaign type, choose products, set a daily budget and a bid. No approval, no waiting period, no application form.

The only real requirement is that your listing is Buy Box eligible. If you do not hold the Buy Box on your own listing, your ads will not serve, and that is a listing and pricing problem rather than an advertising one.

What needs Brand Registry

Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Display, A+ content, the Brand Store and most of the useful reporting sit behind Amazon Brand Registry. Brand Registry needs a registered or pending trademark in the country you are selling in.

If you are a serious brand and you have not registered your trademark, that is the most valuable piece of paperwork you are not doing. It gates a large part of the toolkit and the process takes months, so it is worth starting before you need it.

What to do before you switch anything on

Advertising is the last step, not the first. Before the first campaign runs, three things should be true: the listing is one you would buy from, you know your break-even advertising cost of sale with returns included, and you have decided which products are actually worth promoting.

Launching ads against a catalogue you have not audited is how sellers end up paying auction prices to send real buyers to a page that was never going to convert them.
