Amazon marketing · Answer
The short answer
Sponsored Products promotes a single product, appears in search results and on product pages, is available to any seller, and is measured on whether that product sold. Sponsored Brands promotes your brand with a logo, a headline and several products, requires Amazon Brand Registry, usually appears at the top of search, and is measured on whether you captured a category shopper rather than on a single order.
Sponsored Products is the workhorse and where almost every account should start. It is closest to intent, easiest to judge, and needs nothing but an active Buy Box eligible listing.
Sponsored Brands sits above the results with your logo and a custom headline, and can send traffic to your Brand Store rather than to a single product page. It is a category-level play, and it wants a catalogue behind it.
If you are choosing where the first rupee goes, yes. Sponsored Products converts closer to intent, produces a cleaner read on what your catalogue actually earns, and does not need Brand Registry.
Sponsored Brands earns its place once you have more than one product worth cross-selling, a Brand Store worth sending people to, and enough volume that defending your own branded search from competitors matters.
Sponsored Brands routinely returns a worse ACoS than Sponsored Products and can still be the better spend, because part of what it buys is a shopper who had not settled on a brand yet. Held to a Sponsored Products ACoS target it will get switched off every time.
This is where TACoS earns its keep. If Sponsored Brands is doing its job, the effect shows up in total sales rather than inside its own attributed line.
A sponsored result is a paid placement and carries a Sponsored label. An organic result is there because Amazon's algorithm ranked it on relevance and sales history. The two look nearly identical by design.
For a seller this matters in one specific way. If you rank first organically and also buy the sponsored slot above yourself, you may be paying for a click you were going to get free. That is worth testing rather than assuming, in either direction.
