Flipkart marketing · Answer

Can I sell on Flipkart without a brand?

The short answer

Yes. Many categories allow unbranded or generic listings, and you can also resell an existing brand if you hold authorisation for it. What a brand of your own buys you is the ability to own a listing rather than share one. Without it you compete on price and delivery speed against everyone selling the same item, and that is a harder position to hold than a new seller expects.

The three positions you can take

Generic or unbranded listings, which several categories permit. Apparel, home and accessories are the usual ones. The category rules decide it and there is no blanket policy.

Reselling an authorised brand, which requires a document trail. Listing a brand you have no authorisation for is the fastest route to a takedown and a strike on the account.

Registering your own brand, which is the only one of the three that gives you a listing nobody else can attach to.

What you give up without one

On a shared listing you are one of several sellers behind the same product page, so the differentiators reduce to price, delivery promise and seller rating. Whoever is willing to earn least tends to win the box.

You also inherit the ratings and the return history of the listing rather than building your own, which cuts both ways and is outside your control either way.

Flipkart brand approval: when you need it

Brand approval is permission to list under a brand name inside Seller Hub. If the brand on your listing is not already approved, Flipkart asks you to apply. Flipkart's own seller video gives the route: Listings, then Add New Listings, then Apply for Brand Approval.

Brand Assure is a different programme. It is where a brand owner authorises sellers, reports trademark, copyright and design violations and shows a Brand Assured badge. Its enrolment checklist, on Flipkart's Brand Hub page read on 11 October 2026, lists a valid trademark registration number, a current GSTIN and, if you represent another brand, a Brand Authorization Letter.

We have not filed these applications for a client, so we do not quote timelines. Flipkart's forms and requirements change, so read the current form in Seller Hub before you plan a launch around it.

When registering a brand is worth it

When the category has room for a genuinely different product. A private label in a commodity category just joins the same race carrying more inventory risk.

When you intend to advertise. Paying to send traffic to a listing that any other seller can win is an expensive way to subsidise a competitor.

Brand registration takes time on the trademark side, so it is a decision worth making before the catalogue is built rather than after the margin gets squeezed.

Questions sellers ask

How do I apply for brand approval on Flipkart?

Flipkart's seller video on brand approval says to go to the Listings tab, click Add New Listings and select Apply for Brand Approval. The current form in Seller Hub shows what it asks for.

Do I need a trademark to sell on Flipkart?

Not for every category. Several allow generic or unbranded listings, and you can resell a brand you are authorised for. A trademark matters when you want to own the listing: Flipkart's Brand Assure checklist starts with a valid trademark registration number.

What is the difference between brand approval and Brand Assure?

Brand approval is permission to list under a brand name in Seller Hub. Brand Assure is Flipkart's programme for brand owners to authorise sellers, report violations and display a Brand Assured badge.
